GSB Search has been retained by a family-owned organization to find an experienced Corporate Controller to support rapid growth. This organization has multiple business units that range from heavy equipment hauling, equipment sales, to demolition projects.

These companies are experiencing double-digit growth and must install proper accounting and process controls to prepare for continued growth. Current revenue is over $30M and the plan is to grow both organically and through acquisition to over $75M in 5 years.

Opportunity at a Glance

The Controller position is responsible for the accounting operations of the company portfolio.  This includes the production of periodic consolidations and financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk.  They will also be charged to enhance the accuracy of the company’s reported financial results and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.  The Controller will be a trusted advisor to the CFO and Ownership and must be a strong influencer who possesses professional maturity and credibility with little ego.

Opportunity to Make a Difference

You will have the opportunity to execute and improve in the following areas:

  • Lead the professional staff of 3 in accounting and reporting activities including the development of monthly US GAAP compliant financial statements.
  • Ensure reporting compliance with key internal/external business partners including banks and investors.
  • Implement new accounting pronouncements in a timely manner.
  • Maintain an appropriate internal control environment for financial reporting and analysis. Evaluate the impact of possible internal control weaknesses and develop contingency and remediation plans.
  • Coordinate and manage the external financial audit process consistent with the established internal controls and external compliance environment.
  • Make certain corporate finance and accounting staff are trained and operationally effective. Promote staff skill development and encourage innovation and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Lead the annual budget process as well as enterprise-wide projects as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.

What We Are Looking For

Education and experience typically found in the person who can perform at a high level in this position would include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance/similar discipline, CPA, and/or MBA is preferred with 5-7 years of progressive accounting and financial leadership experience.
  • Prior experience in Transportation, Manufacturing, and Distribution, and or related industry is preferred but not required.
  • Experience as a well-rounded financial leader with strong strategy, planning, and execution skills.
  • Knowledge of financial reporting systems and process re-engineering.
  • Ability to collaborate across the company, particularly with sales, operations, and company subsidiaries.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization and serves as the finance and accounting subject matter expert.
  • History of possessing highly effective leadership and communication skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Can articulate and implement key lessons learned and identify improvement opportunities.
